The Appeal of MMO games

Hi I'm Joseph, I've been playing games for over 10 years, and I'm part of Game Life. Check us out on our website and on Facebook, where we have lots of content to enjoy!

Why are MMO games so popular? Who are they for? What makes an MMO good?

An MMO is a Massively Multiplayer Online game. It consists of huge numbers of people playing together and enjoying the game with each other. Some of the most popular games in this genre include World of Warcraft, The Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy 14 Online, Destiny 2, and more.

How is an MMO different from a normal multiplayer game?

There are thousands of multiplayer games out there, from Battlefield, to Forza, to Animal Crossing. However, an MMO differs slightly due to the scale of the game, with events that can have 100s of people participating. Compare that to a normal multiplayer game like Battlefield, with only 32 players per team, and it pales in comparison.

MMOs not only are huge in player size, but also offer longevity that many other multiplayer games don’t. Think about it, how many Call of Duty games have there been? They release a new addition to the series every year, to keep it fresh. MMOs just build off of what they have, which adds a warming sense of familiarity to the environment of the game. s

Why should you play an MMO?

Recently I became interested in MMOs. A big part of an MMO to me, is the social aspect, where you can talk to and befriend people who share the same passion as you. Normal multiplayer games often neglect this is part of their game. You play with random people and never get to make a community of friends to enjoy the game with.

In an MMO like Final Fantasy 14, there are multiple ways of creating a community of like-minded friends, there are Free Companies, and Linkshells. You can even go to their website and search for communities based on their time zone, their interests, and more.

Another important thing to consider is the pure scale of these games. MMO games often run for a long time, and have multiple expansions added over time. If you’re joining late, you have access to years worth of content to explore and enjoy. Even if the game is new, there is still so much to do, there is something for everybody in MMO games.

The future

MMO games are leading the future of gaming, by giving people platforms to be social with each other in a safe and friendly environment, and by the sheer scale and universal appeal

of the games.
